Essential oils are volatile components derived from the flowers, leaves, roots and/or seeds of plants. Plants secrete a mixture of complex molecules to aid and support their ecology, examples of such are the release of aromatic compounds, flavorings and pigments to attract insects for pollination. These secretions also help plants adapt to environmental stresses such as extreme sunlight and temperatures, in addition to providing a defense response against parasites, and to repelling herbivores. ‘Steam Distillation’ or in the cases of some citrus oils, the ‘Cold Expression’ of their peels, are widely used methods of extraction which ensures the properties of the essential oils remain preserved for efficacy to be used in skincare, aromatherapy including flavors and fragrances.
